Transportation spending up for a vote in Congress

October 14, 2011

Dear Passenger Train Advocate:

The Senate expects to vote on the FY 2012 THUD spending bill during the
week of October 17. At that time Senators will have the opportunity to
offer amendments that may adversely impact Amtrak and/or the HSIPR
program. *We may see amendments to reduce these numbers, to include
House language forbidding Amtrak to use any of its funds to support
short-distance corridors, or to micromanage Amtrak in other ways*.

We will let you know if there are any adverse amendments filed. In the
meantime, please ask your senators to work hard to protect the Amtrak
and <a href=". “>high speed rail numbers In the current environment, these are the likely the best numbers possible.

The Congressional HSIPR Caucus is currently circulating a letter to the
Chairmen and Ranking Members of the House and Senate Appropriations
Subcommittee on Transportation and Housing & Urban Development *urging
them to support a funding level of $1.48 billion for Amtrak and the $100
million for high-speed and intercity passenger rail (HSIPR) for FY 12.*
Take a minute and contact your Congressmen to ask them to <a href="”>cosign the
letter.

Thank you for your work,

Ross B. Capon
