Trains For America

More choices for better transportation

Will: Why Liberals Love Trains – Newsweek

So, if I understand correctly, supporters of HSR have a mental illness? And members of the Tea Party are sane?

But seriously, this column represents the tragic decline of Mr. Will’s intellectual capacity. It is actually quite shocking in tone and content.

Will: Why Liberals Love Trains – Newsweek.

UPDATE: This reader’s comment is so spot-on that I had to move it to the front page. Thanks Jay Heiser.

He's almost echoing Bush's explanation for Islamic terrorism,
explaining "they hate our freedom," and he's so trapped within
the system of American cultural norms that he is apparently
unable to recognize all of the freedoms that come from having
access to an efficient and comprehensive system of non-auto
transportation.

I agree with his concerns about America's lack of economic
density reducing the potential for high speed trains, but
beyond that, it appears that George has lost his intellectual
edge. He recently wrote a column defending Exceptionalism that
was similiarly superficial.

Has the last great right-wing intellectual finally given up the
fight, succumbing to a numb recitation of bog standard Fox
talking points?

Actually Pat, the members of the Tea Party are quite sane and better to be a Tea Bagger than Flee Bagger.

There’s nothing shocking about Will’s column. He is attempting to find an answer that makes sense for the left being stuck on stupid about HSR.

Even Trains4America has, in the past, commented on the fact that the money would be better spent upgrading and expanding existing lines than on a few HSR lines.

While I think Will is partially correct. I think the bigger reason is just elitist snobbery. The capital of leftist, elitist snobs in the US is NYC. These elitists are pseudo-Europeans and since Europe has HSR, then by the gods, so should they!

Amtrak has pandered to these snobs with Acela but Acela is like your hick cousin driving a Peugeot when the true elites are driving a Mercedes. It just does reach the standards that the Europeans cousins are accustomed to when they come for a visit.

Of course, the left coast wants to emulate the patrician snobbery of the east coast and they do they’re best to rise even to east coast standards.

In the meantime, those of us in the middle are stuck with slow, old trains.

That darned Amtrak! PANDERING to the 25% of population and productivity that lives along the northeast corridor! European bastards! Elitists!

Now, if you will excuse me, commenting here has interrupted my wine and brie.
