Trains For America

More choices for better transportation

Even slowly, train needs to roll | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com

Some die-hard advocates of high-speed rail to South Hampton Roads sniff at suggestions that the region put its energy behind conventional passenger service.

“Why settle for less than the fastest trains?” they ask. “Don’t the region’s million residents deserve the best?”

Of course we do.

But while that argument appeals to the ego, it doesn’t reflect the reality of what it will take to attract the best and fastest trains to our communities.

  1. While Maglev is the fastest ground transportation on the planet, it can also go slow. Maglev’s big advantage is efficiency. In fact New York’s subway system which makes stops every eight blocks, could save energy because its braking system is regenerative. This means that the kinetic energy which is usually lost is 95% recovered adding to it’s inherent efficiency. see http://www.magneticglide.com
