Here is something which is almost impossible to conceive in America. In fact, it is a double-header. First, high speed rail has been generally nothing but a daydream, and the possibility of competition on HSR routes is just about unimaginable.
SNCF, the French rail group, could soon face a Franco-Italian challenge to its domestic monopoly on lucrative high-speed lines – including the Eurostar route from Paris to London.
