Here is something which is almost impossible to conceive in America. In fact, it is a double-header. First, high speed rail has been generally nothing but a daydream, and the possibility of competition on HSR routes is just about unimaginable.

SNCF, the French rail group, could soon face a Franco-Italian challenge to its domestic monopoly on lucrative high-speed lines – including the Eurostar route from Paris to London.

‘Hijacked By High-Speed Trains’ – China Real Time Report – WSJ

The ministry’s Wuhan branch has decided that because of the introduction of the high-speed trains, it will suspend a number of existing, much-slower counterparts on the same route.

Why is this seemingly rational decision bad news for many Chinese? It comes down to cost: The cheapest fare for the new high-speed service is 490 yuan (around $72), more than three times that of the slow train.

Siemens prepped for more US light rail, high speed | Reuters

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec 23 (Reuters) – The U.S.-based transport arm of Siemens AG (SIEGn.DE) has ramped up production to feed growing demand for urban light-rail systems and also has its eyes on a nascent U.S. push for high-speed rail.
