Since I am in the academic mode these days, let us approach this in an even handed manner. The author of this opinion piece lays has one of his principle arguments against high speed rail in California the anemic ridership numbers on the entire Amtrak system. Not even apples to oranges. More like apples to concrete blocks.

    I think you misread the article. He used the Amtrak numbers only as counterpoint to the initial pie-in-the-sky ridership projects of CASHR.

    The more important part came a bit later:

    … California High-Speed Rail Authority officials are being forced to discuss their project more honestly. An updated business plan released this week scraps several ridiculous claims in favor of somewhat or slightly less ridiculous claims. The San Francisco-Los Angeles fare is now projected to be $105, not $55. Annual ridership is now expected to be 41 million, not 117 million.
