Federal commission seeks up to 40 cent-a-gallon increase in gas tax

Should federal gasoline taxes should be raised 40 cents a gallon to pay for fixing roads, bridges and congestion?

Saying the country is in transportation “death spiral,” a national commission today recommended as much as a 40-cent increase in the federal gas tax to unclog our highways.

The non-partisan panel created by Congress issued a report calling for a massive infusion of money into the country’s transportation system, including transit as well as commercial and passenger rail service.
