More choices for better transportation

GOP platform: Cut Amtrak, privatize airport security and focus highway money on roads – The Hill’s Transportation Report

No surprise here.

The platform approved by Republicans on Tuesday calls for the elimination of funding for Amtrak passenger rail service, private airport security screening and stopping the use of money earmarked for highway construction for other purposes.

The more than 30,000-word document was approved on the first full day of the 2012 GOP convention in Tampa, Fla. It includes many provisions that were pushed by Republicans in the House during recent negotiations over the new $105 billion transportation bill that was approved by lawmakers in June.

I figure that, just to keep everything “on the straight and narrow – as far as you know,” Mitt could find some charmingly deft way to continue operational money for Utah light rail and commuter trains as “honorary highway funding….”

Yes, indeed, children. Now just drink your Kool Aid — and repeat after me — “Commonize Costs / Privatize Profits….Commonize Costs / Privatize Profits….”

  2. Why am I not surprised. Well folks, either vote Democrat and hope you can keep the trains, or vote Republican and set American transportation back at least a generation, likely longer. As for me, at 73, I have given up on ever seeing a meaningful rail network in this land of the rich, home of the not rich.

Jerry, I certainly agree, except that America’s transportation policy is already several generations behind. It serves only the interests of the monied interests that own government. Very sad.

… “focus highway money on roads” … Where else should “highway money” be focus’d?
