You will hoot with delight. This brightened my holiday (even though it has a somewhat grim overtone). Usual stipulation: TFA generally devotes itself to inter-city passenger rail issues, but this story is a dandy and some valuable insight for the rest of us.

A new high speed train service is now in operation between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The inaugural journey by the Sapsan high speed service left Moscow on December 17th. One of the passengers on board was Vladimir Yakunin the Russian Railways President. He announced that the new trains were not simply trains with carriages but a new type of travel altogether, a new type of technology.

The time savings that the new system delivers may not justify the cost, creating a potential drag on long-term growth, said Michael Pettis, former head of emerging markets at Bear Stearns. The losers are Chinese consumers, who will have to wait for new health care and old-age benefits while the government focuses on public works spending, he said.
