McCain worse than Bush on Amtrak and transport policy

This idea has been floating around for the past few days, but here is an excellent column from Wes Vernon dealing with Paul Weyrich’s rail advocacy and McCain’s stout opposition.

The issues

Weyrich’s comment came during his discussion of the latest developments in the behind-closed-doors give-and-take negotiations at the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission (NSTPRSC) regarding his effort to see that electric railway (streetcar) transit is given its due in the final commission report. (See last week’s column America’s Crumbling Transportation System.)

Weyrich knows that Senator McCain, throughout his career, has been very anti-rail, and in that respect “would be [even] worse than the present [Bush] administration,” whose Transportation Secretary Mary Peters (a big highway booster) has fought tooth and nail (as commission chairman) to block the pro-rail efforts of Weyrich and others allied with his 9-to-3 commission majority.

McCain “would fight us on everything,” Weyrich opined, and not just on rail issues, but also regarding several conservative concerns such as the Arizona senator’s open-borders stance on immigration — and “He hates talk radio. He [McCain] has indicated he would favor shutting it down. He hates the religious right.”

To sum it up, the conservative leader expressed the views of many principled conservatives: “What would we want him [McCain] for?”

The Arizonan has said shutting down Amtrak — he’s if elected — would be “a non-negotiable issue” for him. Short-sighted, indeed.

Coalition Seeks Full Funding From Congress

Progress Amtrak Has Made

WASHINGTON, DC — The States for Passenger Rail Coalition (www.s4prc.org) vigorously opposes President Bush’s 2009 budget for Amtrak, which would drastically slash funding by $455 million — a 34 percent  cut.

The 2009 budget calls for $900 million for Amtrak in the coming year, a sharp drop from the current funding level of $1.355 billion.

The coalition, made up of 31 states in all parts of the nation, today called on Congress to reverse the cuts and continue the momentum of expanded passenger rail service in America. Coalition members stressed  the budget ignores the strong public demand for passenger rail service. In 2007, Amtrak carried 25.8 million passengers — the fifth consecutive year of increased ridership for the nation’s passenger railroad.

“The White House budget ignores what the traveling public wants,” Frank Busalacchi, chair of the States for Passenger Rail Coalition, said. “The ridership numbers speak for themselves. More and more people are traveling by train every year. The budget proposal also undermines the growing partnerships between states and Amtrak to expand service in heavily traveled corridors.”

Busalacchi also pointed out the proposed budget cuts run counter to the recommendations of the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission, which recently issued its report “Transportation for Tomorrow”.

The commission’s report to Congress, released in January, called for expanded capital investments in passenger rail service through 2050.

That  report recommended retaining the entire existing passenger rail system in America, and adding new service in areas where population is expected to grow at a significant rate.

Examples of new service corridors are: Fort Wayne with Chicago; Kansas City with Omaha; Nashville with Atlanta, Knoxville with Chattanooga.

The plan builds upon the existing national passenger rail network by adding more frequent service, includes development of federally designated high-speed rail corridors and makes future service extensions designed to connect population centers. The plan also quantifies the energy, safety, environmental, congestion and mobility benefits of passenger rail service.

“With gasoline prices rising, highway congestion worsening, and record airline delays continuing, it only makes sense to invest more in America’s passenger rail system,” Busalacchi said.

Those crazy Frogs are at it again!

Believe it or not, the newest French train would shave 33 minutes off the London – Paris running time. Yep, 1 hour and 42 minutes. It’s a good thing we have no need for such new-fangled stuff in the USA! The London Telegraph reports.

The TGV, France’s very fast train and a source of Gallic pride, is set to be replaced by an even speedier model, the AGV, which President Nicolas Sarkozy will officially launch today.

The unveiling of the AGV, Automotrice à Grande Vitesse (high-speed self-propelled carriage) will take place near La Rochelle, western France.

The new generation of trains will travel at a top speed of 224 mph compared to 186 kph for most TGVs (Trains a Grande Vitesse) currently used in France.

WASHINGTON WASHINGTON – The White House released a $3.1 trillion budget request today that includes $68 billion for transportation programs and services for the 2009 fiscal year.

The transportation spending plan – smaller than the current year’s by $2.3 billion – reflects a reduction from what Congress gave Amtrak this year. But it also marks a record amount of money for transit programs nationwide, the Bush administration said.

Bush sought $900 million for Amtrak, the quasi-private passenger rail service – $300 million for operations, $500 million for capital expenses including upgrading the Northeast Corridor, and $100 million for grants to states to increase service between heavily traveled cities.
